NYSC | 10 Essentials To Go To Camp With

NYSC is the dream of most Nigerian graduates, also the nightmare of a good majority of Nigerian graduates.

NYSC – National Youth Service Corps is a mandatory one-year program every young Nigerian graduate must partake in.

This program was set up by the Nigerian government to involve Nigerian graduates in nation-building and the development of the country. With the sole purpose of fostering national unity and cohesion.

It was founded on the 22nd of May, 1973 by Yakubu Gowon and Adebayo Adedeji

A new batch of graduates are posted to different parts of the country at least every quarter of the year. A new batch will be leaving for NYSC camp shortly, and most of them have no idea of the essentials to go to camp with.

10 Essentials To Go To NYSC Camp With:

White round-necked T-shirts:

This is super important as the NYSC officials always give Corp members wears that are either bigger or smaller than their size.  Have at least 2 to 3 extra white shirts.

White shorts:

You’re going to be involved in a lot of physical activity, the possibility of ruining your shorts is high, always have extra for this purpose.

White tennis shoes and white socks:

I don’t know why NYSC loves the color white, but have an extra white tennis shoe and socks. If you’re going to camp in the rainy season, get white rubber shoes.

Mosquito net:

Or else you plan on treating malaria every day, this should be on the top of your list.

Waist pouch: did I mention you’ll be involved in a lot of physical activity? Yes, you will. A waist pouch is a must-have. Get one not too small and not too big, one that can contain your daily essentials like your phone, power bank, charger, ID card, ATM, keys, cash, etc.

Phone and power bank:

A power bank is essential because you may not have the luxury of charging your phone 24/7. So get a strong power bank that can last you the day. Don’t worry, you’ll learn how to manage your battery in camp.

Torchlight:

Just like boarding school days, 10 PM is lights out in camp. Do well to go with a torchlight.

Buckets:

Very important! Even though most camps have showers, for example, Lagos camp – water is regulated. The bucket is to store water with.

Padlocks:

You’ll be in a room with at least 30 strangers, no one should be trusted. Keep your property safe and locked and always have your key in your pouch. At night, put your key in your pouch, wear the pouch and sleep with it. Or you can put it under your pillow and hold it tight as you sleep! You can never be too safe.

Extra cash:

Even though most camps have POS or mobile ATMs, the charges are higher than normal. Always have extra cash just in case.

Bonus: Provisions/snacks:

If you’re like me and you have no plan of taking your meal ticket, then go with provisions and snacks. The food served in camp isn’t all that so go prepared.

NYSC can be fun, it’s not as bad as most people make it look. Go to meet people and have a good time and you just might enjoy it!
