WATER FASTING || MY 14 DAYS EXPERIENCE AND THE RE-FEEDING PROCESS

I can’t believe it’s been 3 weeks since I completed my 14 days water fast journey and in this post, I’ll be sharing my 14 days water fast experience.

On the 10th of November, I had a big meal of Jollof rice and fried fish which is totally the wrong thing to eat before a fast. But the fast was a last minute decision because I’ve been trying to complete a 14 days water fast all year and I was never getting to day 3. So, on the 10th I said to myself “Ucheyy we are doing this fast from tomorrow whether you like it or not” and that was how it happened.

DISCLAIMER || I’m not in any medical field, and I’ll advice anyone interested in water fasting to talk to their doctor.

Now let’s get into the fast. I’ll do my best to explain how I felt in the best way possible.

Day 1-3
I woke up with a full belly from the previous day, so I was energetic and ready to conquer any and every obstacle. My target was to take at least 2-3 liters of water daily. Day 1 and day 2 went so fast and felt effortless, but by day 3 I think the glucose in my body was dropping. I was lightheaded and I felt slightly dizzy when getting up from the bed. That was the only discomfort I felt, day 1-3 was a breeze except me perceiving food from a hundred miles lol.

Day 4-6
These 3 days were literally the worst days of the fast because my body was entering / entered ketosis.
What’s ketosis? According to Wikipedia, Ketosis is a metabolic state characterized by elevated levels of ketone bodies
in the blood or urine.[1] Physiologic ketosis is a normal response to low glucose availability, such as low-carbohydrate diets
or fasting, that provides an additional energy source for the brain in the form of ketones.

Let me explain it how I felt it; as I wasn’t having carbs, and my body wasn’t converting anything to glucose, my body was in a fasted state so it switched up to using ketones as a source of energy for my brain. But the energy spike wasn’t as high as using glucose for energy. I was still weak, dizzy and lightheaded, oh and I had this serious thick white coat on my tongue which lasted till a few days post fast.

Since my heart rate had dropped, and I could barely do anything serious, I spent these days in bed. And the occasional trip to the kitchen for water and the bathroom to pee. Btw, I didn’t do the number 2 till day 4 post fast.

Btw, my bf is a doctor so I was checking in with him on everything and promised to stop when I feel my body shutting down.

Day 7-10
I literally thought I was going to die no jokes. On day 7, I couldn’t open my eyes in the morning for at least 10 minutes. Owo (my friend) was scared to her bones lol. The pain of every  wound, surgery I ever had in life resurfaced with a force. I lay in bed folded myself and cried because I was in severe pains. When I finally felt better, I googled it and I learnt that when one is in a fasted state, the body repairs every tissue in it. For example, I had a major surgery in 2016, which obviously had healed but during the water fast my body started a deep tissue cleanse so it had to heal properly everything that needed healing. This went on till the night of day 9, I felt so good and so happy and energetic. Like I could run a marathon, so I watched movies all night long. Did I mention that I relieved every emotions I have ever had? On the night of day 8, I was crying in my sleep as I relieved every memory of my mom (she passed away in 2011). I felt the pain like the incident happened, I went through her death process till the funeral till the memorial all in one night. Day 10 was my best day, I woke up feeling so happy for no reason. I was grateful for everything and it was a perfect day.

Day 11-14
By day 11 I couldn’t breathe. I literally couldn’t breathe or move or talk and I felt like the world was coming to an end. I called Owo with the last strength I had and asked her to get me watermelon. She bought the biggest, sweetest watermelon I had ever had! Or maybe it was cause I hadn’t eaten in 11 days. I spent the rest of the fast days eating watermelon and I knew my body still had more cleaning to do, but I also knew it was time to end the fast.

Before any water fast, the proper thing is to do a juice fast for at least 7 days to reduce the effect a full water fast comes with. I didn’t do that, so my fast was tougher than normal. Everyone reacts different so study your body pre and post fast.

I’ve been on a keto and veggies diet post fast and I now work out 5 days a week. It was an exciting journey and I plan on doing it once every year now. The proper way this time.

I lost a total of 10kg from the fast and for 3 weeks, I’ve maintained that loss with my lifestyle change.
