A FOODIE’S APRIL FOOL’S DAY TALE – A Story

April fool’s day! Celebrated on the 1st day of April every year with a tradition of playing hoaxes or practical jokes on others, often yelling “April Fools!” at the end to clue in the subject of the April Fools’ Day prank.

As much as I’d love to take us down to 1582 and share a little April fool’s day history/origin with you, that isn’t the pressing issue here!

So what is the pressing issue? Well, you’ll have to keep reading to find out…

It was a beautiful calm Thursday, just like every other Thursday. But I forgot, I forgot what day it was. You see, we were all wasted from the previous night – my housemates and I went to our favorite lounge for “ladies night” and we drank till we couldn’t drink anymore. We danced a little too… I digress…

How would I have known they had enough time to plan this hoax or was it planned!? I don’t even know!

I’m a big sleep lover, while everyone had started their day I was still sleeping until a gentle breeze carried the aroma of properly seasoned grilled fish straight into my nose. It was all the alarm I needed to awaken; I quickly grabbed my phone to check the time -6pm! How did time fly so fast? It felt like I had taken a 30 minutes nap. My stomach grumbles loudly, I know what it needs.

Oh yes! Grilled fish.

I walk into the parlor and see my housemates watching something on Netflix, I don’t bother asking. With bubbly excitement, one of them told me they saved me a serving of grilled fish – it was in the microwave she added.

I hurriedly go into the kitchen, quickly opened the microwave to see a covered dish. I grab a fork then proceeded to open up the covered dish… Why was I frozen to the spot? Why couldn’t I move?

I’ll tell you why, I opened up the dish to see just a fishbone elegantly placed on the plate with some sprinkles of ketchup… or was that ketchup? I don’t even know!

No, that wasn’t what made me temporarily paralyzed. The moment I opened the dish, four mischief-filled voices screamed “April’s Fool!” so loudly I almost went deaf!

Alas, I won’t just be going back to bed disappointed, I had the paper fish placed on my back and being referred to as “poisson d’avril” (April fish). Now if you’re wondering what an April fish is -it is said to symbolize a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person. And that is the batch of honor I shall retire my day in.
